How to Lower Your Cooling Bills This Summer

Maria DelgadoApr 28, 2026 6 min read

Cooling is one of the biggest slices of a summer utility bill in most homes, often outpacing every other single expense on the statement. The good news is that a handful of habits and small upgrades can meaningfully cut that cost without asking anyone in the house to sweat it out at a higher setpoint.

1. Install a smart thermostat

A smart thermostat learns your schedule and automatically backs off cooling when nobody's home, then brings the house back to temperature just before you return. Over a full season, that scheduling alone typically saves more than most people expect from a single device.

2. Seal air leaks around windows and doors

Gaps around old weatherstripping and unsealed window frames let conditioned air leak out all day long, forcing your system to run longer to compensate. A caulk gun and a few dollars of weatherstripping is one of the highest-return upgrades available to any homeowner, and it takes an afternoon, not a contractor visit.

3. Keep up with tune-ups

A system that hasn't been serviced in a year or two is almost always running below its rated efficiency - dirty coils, low refrigerant charge, and a clogged filter all make the compressor work harder to deliver the same cooling. An annual tune-up typically pays for itself in efficiency gains alone, on top of catching small issues before they become expensive ones.

4. Use ceiling fans to feel cooler at a higher setpoint

Moving air feels several degrees cooler than still air at the same temperature, which means a ceiling fan running counterclockwise in summer lets you raise the thermostat a few degrees without losing comfort. Just remember to turn fans off when you leave the room - they cool people, not the air itself, so they're wasted energy in an empty space.

5. Close blinds during peak sun hours

Direct sunlight through south- and west-facing windows can add a significant heat load to a room in the afternoon. Closing blinds or curtains during peak sun hours keeps that heat from ever building up in the first place, reducing how hard your system has to work to hold the setpoint.

  • Install a smart, scheduling thermostat
  • Seal air leaks around windows and doors
  • Keep up with annual tune-ups
  • Use ceiling fans to feel cooler at a higher setpoint
  • Close blinds during peak afternoon sun
  • Change your filter monthly during peak cooling season

Putting it together

None of these fixes alone will transform your bill, but stacked together over a full summer, they add up to real, noticeable savings - and most of them cost far less than a single month's cooling bill to implement.
